Day 4 - The Treasure of Teachers

Today was a great day. I've discovered that in the world of teaching secondary education, flexibility and preparedness for the unpredictable is essential. Teachers, you see, face an amazing array of issues on a daily basis, from having students attend classes ill-equipped for the lesson (i.e. no paper, books, calculator etc.), to having to counsel students with life's toughest of problems (i.e no money, no self esteem, health issues, no family support etc.)

Maybe you can recall some teachers in your own experience who influenced you in some way and has shaped you into the person you are today?

My exposure to the world of teachers has led me to the conclusion that the teaching profession is way under-rated, grossly under-paid and totally under-recognised. I guess I'm more conscious now of how teachers are poorly represented in society and are often 'bashed' by the media for the sake of making headlines. Sure, there are bad teachers out there in the industry, but in any discipline, you're bound to get rotten apples, whether you're in the fields of commerce, engineering or I.T. :-)

When you think about it, teachers (alongside parents) play a significant role in establishing our society, and thus, deserve more credit than they get. Teachers are in schools for more than teaching's sake, whether they like it or not. Teachers are like psychologists, disciplinarians, pseudo-parents, career counsellors and advisers all rolled into one.
